Discover Natural Pain Relief with Acupuncture
At REHABILITY NJ, we take an integrated approach to managing pain, injury, and dysfunction. That means multidisciplinary healthcare specialists work together under one roof to provide you with a range of treatment options, often resulting in more relief when combined than they can individually.
While most of our patients are familiar with physical therapy and chiropractic care, we often get more questions about acupuncture treatment. What many people don’t realize is that acupuncture provides a gentle, evidence-based alternative to naturally reducing pain while supporting your body’s healing systems.
Today, we want to answer some common questions about acupuncture to help you decide if it may be right for you.

FAQ About Acupuncture and Pain Relief
What exactly is acupuncture?
Acupuncture originated in Traditional Chinese Medicine. It uses very fine, sterile needles placed at specific points on the body that influence nerves, muscles, and connective tissue. The needle’s stimulation helps the body release natural pain modulators, boost local blood flow, and calm overactive pain pathways.
Our experienced acupuncturist will carefully determine where to place the needles based on your symptoms, health history, and goals.
How does acupuncture for pain relief work?
When our acupuncturist stimulates a point, your body responds in several ways:
- Endorphins and other helpful chemicals increase, helping to block pain signals.
- Tiny blood vessels open up, improving oxygen delivery and clearing waste products from sore tissues.
- The nervous system shifts toward a more relaxed state, reducing muscle guarding and lowering stress.
Over time, these responses help restore normal movement and reduce flare-ups.
Which pain conditions respond well to acupuncture?
Acupuncture is recommended for a range of conditions, including (but not limited to):
- Neck and Back pain
- Arthritic joints/Osteoarthritis
- Headaches/Migraines
- Neuropathy
- Tendonitis
- Muscle spasm/postural strains
What will I feel during a session?
Most people notice a light tap or mild pressure as the acupuncturist places a needle. Some points also create a dull, warm, or tingling sensation that fades within seconds. However, many patients find the overall experience very relaxing and may even doze off during their session.
Sessions usually last 30 to 45 minutes. Afterward, it is common to feel looser and more at ease.
How many visits will I need?
The number of visits you’ll need varies depending on your condition and specific symptoms. Acute issues may improve within a handful of sessions, while chronic pain often needs several weeks of consistent care. Your acupuncturist will outline a goal-oriented plan, then modify it based on your progress.
Can I combine acupuncture with other natural therapies?
Absolutely. In fact, we generally recommend acupuncture as part of a comprehensive care plan that may include physical therapy, chiropractic care, and other techniques to optimize your response to treatment with maximum improvement.
We’ll also suggest a treatment protocol that makes sense for your body. For example, we may suggest acupuncture to facilitate pain relief and relax tight muscles, as your body acclimates to other therapies and adjustments. As you feel more comfortable, your condition will likely respond faster with better results.
What can I do at home to improve results?
Your provider will tailor a simple routine that matches your condition and schedule. Here are some examples of what we might suggest:
- Drink water throughout the day
- Move briefly, every hour if you sit for work
- Practice slow breathing to lower tension
- Use heat therapy for stiff muscles
- Sleep on a supportive pillow and mattress
Who is a good candidate for acupuncture?
We generally recommend acupuncture for anyone who prefers a natural approach to pain relief, especially if they’re looking to reduce reliance on medication. For those suffering with chronic pain associated with their medical history, this is where acupuncture shines. It can also be beneficial if you haven’t found relief with more traditional treatment options.
